Please donate to improve health and safety standards on East African flower farms and give important and practical support to women flower farm workers.
Women workers on flower farms are not always fully informed of the necessary precautions regarding health and safety regulations and procedures and, because toxic chemicals are sprayed onto the plants as pesticides, it is vital that certain safety measures are followed.
Please support the production of three health and safety posters to be distributed to flower and vegetable farms in five East African countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia and Kenya. The idea came from a GHOWERNGlobal Horticultural Workers’ and Environmental Rights Network meeting. The posters have been designed in Kampala and Flavia Amoding from Uganda WEA is co-ordinating the production and distribution.
GHOWERN are hoping to produce 3,000 of each of three designs eventually, but they have very limited funds and printing in Africa is extremely expensive, so they have asked Women Working Worldwide if we can raise money towards this project, arrange for the posters to be printed in the UK and send them to Africa.
We estimate that it will cost in the region of £750 to print and send each of the posters.
Coming SoonWe have filmed workers speaking about conditions on flower farms and their fight to claim their rights as workers and also partners speaking about the work of the project. We hope to make some clips available soon on the website. Meanwhile, if you haven't already, watch the short film "Roots - Where do flowers come from?" here. We were consulted on the making of this striking animated video. Also there is a trailer for the film "A Blooming Business" here. Described rightly as "a poetic documentary", we have shown this (with permission) at some events - it is a dramatic and powerful film. EthiopiaActivity in the Current Project : Developing Strategies for Change for Women Workers in African Horticulture Currently women flower workers from Uganda and Tanzania are visiting Ethiopia as part of the project’s Workers’ Exchange Programme. The visit is hosted by NFFPFATU (National Federation of Farm, Plantation, Fishery and Agro-industry Trade Unions of Ethiopia). They will meet with Ethiopian workers and discuss common problems and share solutions. Later a party of Ethiopian workers will visit both Uganda, where they will be hosted by the Uganda Workers’ Education Association, and Tanzania, hosted by Tanzania Plantation and Allied Workers’ Union. ManchesterUK Campaigning Activity Have you made a flower for women working worldwide yet? We had a stall at the Platt Fields Centenary Festival on 8th May. Our aim was to raise awareness about women flower workers in East Africa. We made tissue paper flowers with an awareness raising label and gave them out. We also asked people to write messages of solidarity to women flower workers to be sent to our partners in Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia for distribution. You can send a solidarity message online here. Read more about our campaigning work here. New WebsiteIf you have visited our website before, you will see some changes.
